The automated retail industry is one of the two core technology showplaces today (financial Services being #2).

    • Emerging technologies such as robotics, lockers, digital signage, vending and automated vending lead the way.   Amazon and Google revolutionize physical delivery. OuterWall has another great idea (or not).
    • More mature retail technology includes interactive displays, next-generation POS,  mobile interplay, multi-touch, kiosks for self-service, video services, and customer service technology.
    • Companion technologies include ATMs, kiosks, Advanced ATMS,  NFC and thin client.
    • Standards – here we have more regulatory guidelines in play along with more standards than any other industry. PCI, OPOS, JPOS, MPOS,  HIPAA, ADA, UL, CE just to name a few.

Subway Freshens Its Recipe for Digital Payments

Subway is reimagining how ordering, payments and marketing tie together at its sandwich shops. It’s in the process of launching a new division called Subway Digital, which will pool the expertise of specialists in technology, marketing and operations rather than give full rein to any one of those disciplines.

The company is assembling a digital team of 150 full-time employees over the next two years, with some coming from consulting company Accenture. The sandwich chain will still use agencies to produce content, while the 150-person team will focus on technology development, loyalty programs, digital strategy and consumer behavior.

 

“We are taking a good look at what ‘loyalty’ means for consumers and how to integrate digital experience into restaurant experience,” said Carman Wenkoff, chief information officer and chief digital officer for Subway.

Foxconn cuts 60,000 jobs, replaces with robots

Apple supplier Foxconn cut 60,000 jobs at a single factory, work that is now being completed by robots. As many as 600 companies in Kunshan may follow suit.

In order to change over from human workers to robots, Foxconn & others in Kunshan spent $610 million US on artificial intelligence in 2015.

South Carolina Bans Remote Exams for Eyeglass Prescriptions

Optometrists’ and ophthalmologists’ associations differ on whether the exams and prescriptions are safe for patients; 10 states now have similar bans.

The South Carolina legislature has overridden a veto of Gov. Nikki Haley (R) to make South Carolina the 10th state to ban eyeglass prescriptions based solely on remote eye exams.

Sam’s Club is padding its lead over Costco in the e-commerce wars

Sam’s Club’s lead over Costco in e-commerce has widened, and new initiatives like store pick-up of online orders could boost it further.

Club Pick-Up lets customers build and save shopping lists online so they can re-order the same items later automatically, among other features. That function is particularly useful for Sam’s business members, a segment where growth has been tentative.

Google and Microsoft Advance Efforts To Deliver Bots 

20 percent of all Google queries are spoken. The new Google Assistant was one of the stars of the search engine’s annual Google I/O conference last week, while Microsoft may be looking to bring its intelligent bots to Bing.
